MaggieMooseTracks 2012 in review! Happy New Years!

"We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."
The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog:
maggiemoosetracks.wordpress.com.
Here's an excerpt:

MaggieMoose Sings Blue Christmas

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Be it jewel or toy, not the prize gives the joy, but the striving to win the prize."

Maggie's Christmas presents

  On Christmas morning Maggie was excited for she had some toys under the Christmas tree. All of us adults waited to open our presents till after Maggie had opened hers. The best toy she liked was the rubber Hide-A-Squirrel dog toy. This was a puzzle toy. Past tense.

Inside the yellow tree stump was a hard rubber squeaky squirrel. The object was to retrieve the squirrel toy through the tree stump's openings. Maggie had that solved in record time. A little rip here and a little rip there and out the squirrel came. Bad news. I had to take the tree stump away from her. Maggie was not happy to lose her tree stump. She relished shaking and chewing on the stump. I felt lousy for I took the sport out of the toy by removing the biggest part of it. Sometimes life happens. It was reminiscent of those times when I remember my parents telling me "....it's for your own good...." Sorry Maggie.

Now Maggie was left with the squeaky and modernistic looking squirrel. She carried the squirrel around and she squeaked it, all the time crying. We had never heard Maggie cry before. She's generally a happy girl. It was surprising to hear the crying; was it over the squirrel or the missing tree stump? It's still a mystery.

Maggie took her squirrel and went to her cozy bed. Throughout the day Maggie carried the squirrel around and cried on and off. If I threw the toy for playing she chased it and carried it back crying. It reminded me of Moaning Myrtle in the J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. For awhile, we hid the toy and Maggie happily played with other toys. Later when I gave the squirrel back to her the crying subsided. She loves the squirrel toy. I'm not sure if she thinks about the tree stump the squirrel once lived in or not. I do know that Maggie loves the thrill of the chase in order to get the prize. Now the prize lives next to her bed or in her mouth, instead of a tree stump. She still sings the blues every now and then. It's an odd thing, but one we'll live with, because I know Maggie's happy.

MaggieMoose Grandma Love & Cookies

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"A family is a unit composed not only of children but of men, women, an occasional animal, and the common cold."

Grandma love

  Maggie is a little quieter today. All our relatives left to go back to their homes. This morning when Maggie searched for our Christmas family visitors the rooms were empty. Grandma was pretty special to Maggie. She could always count on lots of attention and deep massages while laying close to her bountiful love. Maggie discovered grandmas are extra, super special even if you have four paws and fur. All that much more surface area for loving. Over Christmas we had everything; children, men, women, Maggie, the common cold and cookies. The Kleenex box was left out for those sniffing and coughing. It didn't bother us, because we were all together as one special family unit. Most of the time we were home bound due to the inclement weather of buckets of rain and lots of wind. UJ (Uncle John) spent time decorating the Christmas cookies. Very artsy. Maggie was a constant companion at his side.

She came up empty handed as she kept circling the table-no cookies for her. No worries. Through out the holiday Maggie had extra dog treats while we munched on fudge, ice cream, pies and Christmas cookies.

Between all the loving of relatives and great fun Maggie had, I think she's also a little worn out.  Her regular sleep cycle went on the back burner as she wanted to be in the center of attention at all times. We loved her antics and licks & hugs. UJ expressed our Christmas time together best-from one heart to another.... we shared love sniffling and munching the whole way through. Together.

Twas The Twig Before Twigmas by MaggieMooseTracks

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."

SEE MAGGIE-CLICK YOUTUBE: 'TWAS THE TWIG BEFORE TWIGMAS

Twas The Twig Before Twigmas

by MaggieMooseTracks®© and a little help from
Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston

'Twas the twig before Twigmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a grouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Twigolas soon would be there;
The moose were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of birch-bark danced in their heads;
And mama in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the meadow there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bush to see what was the matter.
Away to the thicket I flew like a flash,
Tore open the branches to see at last.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny moosedeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Twik.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the trees! to the top of the tall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the tree-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Twigolas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the woof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my antlers, and was turning around,
Down the alders St. Twigolas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his sleeves,
And his clothes were all covered with tree cones and leaves;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the alders he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
HAPPY TWIGMAS to all, and to all a good-night."

WOOF WOOF: Christmas Cheer From A Red Kettle

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas."

 Dee

  Saturday morning Maggie's grandma and I had to do a run to the local Safeway store. It was rainy and windy. Awful weather. PGE trucks were everywhere in the neighborhood restoring power lines. I pulled up to the storefront to drop my mom off. I went to park the car. When I walked up to meet my mom in front of the store there was the most cheerful greeter. She looked so Christmasy in her red coat and knitted green scarf. "Merry Christmas" resonated in the air every time a shopper walked up. She was ringing the bell for The Salvation Army's red kettle donation container. Maggie and I LOVE The Salvation Army. We believe in charities actually giving their financial proceeds and time to the people or causes needing them. Salvation Army does just that and so much more....We have called up their services many times after culling our things. Maggie and I are going for a lean attitude towards our stuff. Who needs stuff? We got each other! Maggie concurs! WOOF WOOF. But, our stuff when sold can make a big difference to someone else's life or lives.... Dee is a wonderful representative for this awesome charity that leaves no one out. Maggie and I encourage others to read all the good the The Salvation Army does in the spirit of Christmas. Click on a link here for The Salvation Army. There is still time to help others that could use a little extra help. When we shop at JCP (JC Penny's) for our last minute Christmas gifts we intend to "round up" our purchases. The extra portion ($) goes to The Salvation Army's many programs. And to Dee, The Salvation Army, and all whom they serve, we say "Merry Twigmas!" J-I-N-G-L-E, J-I-N-G-L-E, we ring the bell of hope, mercy with peace & goodwill.

MaggieMoose Christmas Coin Toss

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful."

  This week Maggie has had a few melting down moments. Not the kind like when one loses self control, but the kind where chocolate melts in the hot sun. UJ (Uncle John) petted her into oblivion last night. She couldn't move a muscle. It reminded me of her literally being attached with super glue. She was not going anywhere. Maggie felt really, really good. Like a coin, Maggie flips to the other side when there's something to get excited about, like presents under the tree or more visitors. Looking very relaxed in her regal pose, she guards her kingdom of presents. Cousin Willy, the moose sits on our piano keeping her company. They wait for the big Christmas eve night..... Mum's the word-tonight we are having more family over. I'll let it be a surprise. If I tell Maggie she might go into Scooby Doo mode with excitement! Arf Arf .... For now, I'll let her stay wrapped up in a soft, magical blanket of Christmas beauty.

Moose Size Pawsabilities In Dance

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"I dwell in possibility."

  Maggie and I love art in all forms. We watched a YouTube video a friend sent us called Thousand Hand Quan Yin. We have never seen this dance before although it has been performed many, many times in over forty countries around the world. Its international debut was at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. The music is beautiful, the movements exquisite, and the dancers magnificent. The Chinese Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe dancers are deaf mutes. They rely on hand signals from the people stationed around them. Maggie and I applaud with all our hands & paws the dancers who dwell in living a life of moose size pawsabilities. It is a beautiful thing to witness.

Bread Pudding, Gators, And Coaching

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"I liked the energy of cooking, the action, the camaraderie. I often compare the kitchen to sports and compare the chef to a coach. There are a lot of similarities to it."

Ornament from New Orleans, LA

  Yesterday I was at a wonderful gathering with some work folks at a fine restaurant called the Mayfield Bakery & Cafe. Maggie remained back home soaking up all the family loving. Yes, Maggie & I have our holiday company. We are thrilled! Back to the restaurant, after our lovely meal the desert I enjoyed was the Caramelized Apple Bread Pudding. No words to describe its richness. Ten out of ten for high marks.

After I was back home I put the family's Christmas presents under the tree by Maggie's cozy bed. I saw our alligator chef Christmas ornament I brought back from our trip to New Orleans, LA (NOLA). Now that was some cooking down there. The best food I have ever tasted. I remember my desert from Commander's PalaceIt was the Creole Bread Pudding Soufflé with warm whiskey creamMy taste buds are spoiled for life. I know Maggie might agree, the cooking smells in NOLA have the potential to drive her crazy with desire and want. Meanwhile at home, Maggie was following the scent of our kitchen's different food groups as our family picked on this or that before the main meal; pizza delivery. Maggie obliged us by tiding up the place through her vacuuming up any crumbs. When the pizza arrived she  chewed on her rawhide treat as she observed us now and then in full pizza mode. Our cooking frenzy is upon us. Christmas less than a week. Lots of goodies on the daily menus. Maggie offered to help clean up the place should we drop any crumbs. Maggie loves Christmas, but more importantly she loves SF 49er football and Santa. Family, food, football, and Santa; all a perfect way to spend a week. LET'S GO COACH HARBAUGH! LET'S GO NINERS! LET'S GO SANTA! Woof, woof, nice treat you left me....

Uncle MooseMas' Christmas Card

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags!"... Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! "Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas... perhaps... means a little bit more!"

 We received a Christmas card from Maggie's Uncle MooseMas. Magical Uncle MooseMas. On the front of the card is a photo of himself grinning antler to antler. He's all about the Christmas season. Lighting is his specialty. He fills his antlers with colorful lights, but he really likes the J-I-N-G-L-E noise makers. He wears his jingle bell collar around his neck and is sure to shake it often. This is the side of Maggie's family that the other side cringes about when they come visit. They have no manners. At dinner they are known to eat the whole tree, not leaving a single branch for others. The proper side of the family calls them the free spirit relatives and sighs. Every kid wishes they had them for their family tree. They are the favorite relatives all kids want to spend time with, especially during the holiday season. Frivolity reigns free. Maggie counts her blessings for Uncle MooseMas is known for his fun & interesting presents. Maggie welcomes Uncle MooseMas' special gifts. It might be a single supercalifragilisticexpialidocious twig to beat all others. Maybe a flight through the sky upon his back jingling all the way? Maggie thinks Christmas means a little bit more, especially when Uncle MooseMas comes to her door.

MaggieMoose-ish Christmas Past

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time."

MaggieMoose Christmas 2011

  Maggie is getting very excited with the new Moose gifts pouring in. She sniffs and sniffs and sniffs them all. We have stuffed moose toys, moose ornaments and more. So MaggieMoose-ish! It takes me back to Christmas past. Looking at Maggie's 2011 photo at Christmas time with her elk antler makes me reminisce. I remember about her human siblings' Christmas past. I still have a photo of the twin girls taken with Santa in a key fob. When my daughter Christy saw Santa at different places she would tell me "That's not the real Santa, the real Santa lives at Stanford Shopping Center". I had to agree with her, the real Santa did use to live there before his big Christmas eve night. I saw the proof, his beard was real when she tugged on it while sitting in his lap. It seems like yesterday our book shelves were filled with Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie books....

As we reflect on those childhood memories Santa comes alive in our hearts. Maggie's friskiness during her first Christmas was great fun. I remember her being perplexed when the ornaments looked like her tennis balls. I could see the dilemma in her puppy mind playing out do I dare play with these? When she walked by the tree she was always doing a double-take looking at those Christmas ornaments. Hysterical. It's fun to become a child again at Christmas time. Maggie and I know where the real Santa lives.

Miracle On Snowy Moose Lane

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant?"

  MaggieMoose is all about the moose family since she's part moose and a connoisseur of twigs like her moose family. A dear friend sent us an email with some snowy moose photos. Woo Hoo! We were loving these images. A miracle indeed to see an albino moose in nature. The email stated these moose photos were taken north of the Wisconsin border near Marenisco, MI. No credit (that we could see) was given for the photographer, but we thank them whoever they are. WOOF! WOOF!

Maggie appreciates other's uniqueness since she is precious herself. She loves to look through another's eyes and step into their hooves or paws. Maggie thinks it improves one's vision on life and shows all the pawsabilities! After all, Maggie is a little snowy and a little brown. Her coat has both colors. For me, Miss Maggie is my miracle as I look through her eyes to see what I have never seen before. Maggie recommends trying this, just for an instant, you might be surprised when two snowy moose show up! MaggieMoose calls it living with moose size pawsabilities! WOOF! WOOF!

MaggieMoose Twigmas Carol

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year."

  One of my most beloved authors is Charles Dickens. I have many versions of his famous seasonal book A Christmas Carol. I am going to read Maggie one of our versions during this Christmas season. She loves to be read to. She cocks her head in different ways listening and watching the words come out of my mouth. It makes her feel all warm and snuggly curled up close.

The biggest part of this Christmas season or rather this Twigmas season has been Maggie's love for including the twigs. I imagine if I kept all her twigs I'd have a mighty kindling bundle to start a fire. I can envision her collecting twigs to keep Tiny Tim warm.  I know she will keep the Twigmas season alive in her heart the whole year. Maggie is just like that.

Peek A Boo-I See You

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"You can observe a lot by just watching."

  The other day as the sun was setting my daughter and I decided to get take out from Sushi House in Palo Alto. It's become a mother-daughter & MaggieMoose ritual for us to pick up a take out order. Then we head home to watch our recorded, brainless reality TV. My feeling is reality TV is kind of like brain candy, but like candy it's probably not good us-or is it? It's people watching of a different kind. None the less we love it. Of course, Maggie is all over this. Who can resist Jeff Probst and Survivor? Maggie knows a cute guy when she sees one. She also loves to smell our food; tempura, sushi, chicken teriyaki .... Maggie gets a treat for herself before snuggling with us while our brains go into a TV coma. We arrived early for the pick up so, we parked the car and just sat waiting while we talked. Maggie was busy in the back of the car people watching. Quietly she scanned the busy parking lot by Trader Joe's-a local hot spot. Not a peep out of her. I wondered what she was thinking as she saw people come and go. Julie went to pick up the food. I looked at Maggie and said Peek A Boo. This interruption caused her to look my way. Now she's looking at me like what the heck. I laughed.

Quickly she turned her head back to people watch. A Julie sighting by Maggie. Springer Spaniel animation at its best as she wiggled her wiggle butt full throttle. Time to head home and go into a deep, brainless coma. Maggie's deep sleep came after her treat as she cuddled up close to us. My daughter and I gasped at all the happenings on reality TV. We watched Maggie sleep with her paws running. Ahhhh.... We love watching her.

Twigmas Tidings: Past, Present & Future

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Yesterday is but today's memory, and tomorrow is today's dream."

  Last night we hung up the last Christmas ornament. It is a gorgeous ornament of layered suitcases with labels from worldwide travel. Future dreaming here. The problem I had was I was missing an ornament hook. All of our hooks were packed away in the Christmas stuff. In our world this is almost like thinking about opening a Pandora's box again. (FYI-We have a lot of Christmas stuff.) Thankfully, I didn't need to do an archaeological dig in our Christmas boxes. My daughter Julie supplied me with some more hooks she had leftover from her Christmas tree. I actually found an English Springer Spaniel ornament in Liver & White like her coloring for Maggie's 2012' Christmas ornament. My memory of its purchase was spending the day celebrating a friend's birthday in the quaint town of Los Gatos, CA. Maggie's ornament came with a little red & green scarf wrapped around it's neck. In our family we have a tradition of each year buying an ornament to reflect each person.

Lately I have cut back in doing this tradition since my Christmas stuff is exploding. My daughter Julie is always reminding me to go through our Christmas stuff and consolidate. How does one consolidate memories? So, ignoring that advise I also bought a dragonfly ornament to remind us of my daughter Christy. This year is the the first time she won't be home for Christmas. She will be with her special someone on the opposite coast.

As for my other daughter Julie, the lover of Elephants, Africa and more.... my special Peanut will be on our tree too as she celebrates her first Christmas with her special someone. Maggie's cozy bed is right beneath the Christmas tree. I have to confess, Maggie is the biggest of ornament of all. And she is the best present of all wrapped up in one. I am blessed. I have come to the conclusion that we will be in the present (a gift) and focus today on tomorrow's dream. Maggie thinks that's a good idea too.

Out Of Tune Talents

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Use what talents you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best."

  Maggie and I love the Stanford Cardinal football team. They have done what they do best this season-WIN. The most unlikely is going to the Rose Bowl. We love the Cardinal bird too for it's brilliant red coloring. In honor of our home team we found a Cardinal ornament for our tree. Maggie did after all cheer on the team throughout the season. It's what she does best-super duper cheerleader.

Her other talent besides companion and friend is posing for photos. On a dime Maggie will pose for me and hold the pose. Such a sweetie. Just this morning as I took the Cardinal ornament photo she sat in her cozy bed and appropriately posed. It is our unspoken language of singing without a tuning bar. Maggie will try her best every time. It doesn't matter if she gets it perfect or right. Into the ring goes her whole heart of loving effort. Maggie's out of tune talents sound best to me and to herself. WOOF WOOF

B In Boston: Fetch Hockey

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be."

B and Ryan

  Maggie's friend B in Boston gets to have a ton of fun playing fetch hockey. B's human dad Ryan straps on his roller blades, picks up his hockey stick and with tennis balls in hand they head to the local court. B is amazing, she can carry two tennis balls in her mouth at once! Maggie can only dream of such a feat, but gives credit where credit is due. WOOF! WOOF! Boston B!

Super star B
B gets a great workout catching and chasing the tennis balls. Her quick fire decision making is paramount to determine which tennis ball she's going to chase & carry. She tries to place herself where the puck (tennis ball) is going to be instead of where it is.

Watch B play Fetch Hockey. Click the link: Fetch Hockey.

No wonder B's so trim and slim. Hey Maggie, maybe we need a hockey stick and some roller blades? Better yet... Hey Ryan and B, come out West. Start a sports camp for Fetch Hockey. Maggie likes the idea. She'll sign up. WOOF! WOOF! A whole new dog and human bonding experience while working out. Fetch Hockey; good for the mind and body. Ask B.

Walking On Raindrops

Maggie's pawsability thought for the day:
"Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby."

  Maggie and I put on our raincoats and headed out into the rain. There's a song called "Walking On Sunshine" by Katrina & The Waves. Maggie's version is Walking On Raindrops.... woooahand don't it feel good? Oh boy, Maggie had some pep in her steps. The rain came down in abundance. At first Maggie was shaking her head as if to shake the drops off. Then she settled into just having a wet head. We continued on dodging plant debris while I carried my umbrella to try and keep my head dry.

We circled back towards home. Maggie's raincoat kept the top of her back from being totally soaked. Her head, underbelly and feet were soaked. It was wet out there and pouring liquid buckets of water. Maggie loved every wet step her big paws took. Her soaking ears were dripping water as she pranced along happy as a clam. Walking On Raindrops....woooahand don't it feel good? Maggie loves walking in and on the rain. Maybe she was dancing in the rain? I know Maggie's prancing and dancing showed me she felt alive! Rain has rewards for Maggie. She loves towels. This is an understatement. Fanatical about the towels is a better description.

She plopped on one towel while I took another towel to dry her off. She went crazy as she rolled around loving every scruffy body rub I gave her. Happy, happy, happy was Maggie right before she slumped in her cozy bed. Rain drop lullaby played in her ears. Walking On Raindrops.... woooahand don't it feel good?
